Yellowstone RV Camping: Seeing it All

from:

Each summer hundreds of thousands of people flock to see the natural wonders contained within Yellowstone National Park. Sites such as Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, Fort Yellowstone, and Roosevelt Tower bring people from around the world. If you are considering a visit to Yellowstone, and all it has to offer, why not consider bringing your RV. Yellowstone RV camping is quite an experience and numerous options are available to allow you to get the most out of both your RV and the park.

Some of the areas of Yellowstone are truly wild, the backcountry. You might find some of it interesting to visit, after setting your RV up at a base camp and then trekking out. Yellowstone RV camping can also be a more affordable way to see the park than staying in the area's hotels, since they get quite expensive during the summer months.

There are eleven campgrounds inside Yellowstone park. If you are going to try to stay at one of them, it is recommended you contact the company that administrates them, Xanterra, to set up a reservation. Nothing can frustrate a Yellowstone RV camping trip more than looking for a site at five or six campgrounds before finding one. Contact the campgrounds in advance especially if your RV is over 30' long, since only a few of them have spaces in place for RVs of that size. Accomodations and hookups vary from campground to campground within Yellowstone, some of the having showers and toilets, dumping facilities, etc, and some having nothing whatsoever.

If you elect not do your Yellowstone RV camping within the park itself, there are several other options available to you. These range in distance from very close to the park's entrance to around 30 – 40 miles outside of it. The closest are Rocky Mountain Campground, Yellowstone RV Park, and Eagle Creek. These, like the park, can be quite busy during the summer, so if you are planning a visit make sure to make reservations, or you will have to work your way out in ever further circles to find a place to stay.

When Yellowstone RV camping, there are some things that you need to keep in mind. If you go out on any long outings, be sure not to drink any unpurified water, as giardia is increasing in the streams and waterways throughout the park. Unfortunately, the crisp clear mountain streams are not so clean as the appear. Also, stick to designated paths, as there are areas where scalding water runs just below the surface of the earth. People who are Yellowstone RV camping should also be wary of bears. Do as the park officials advise and do not feed wild animals. Feeding them only puts you at risk and makes them more aggressive, which will eventually lead to their deaths.
