Dutch oven and camp cooking guidelines

from:

Dutch oven and camp cooking can allow you to make delicious, whole meals while at the campground or around the campfire. A dutch oven acts like a portable oven, allowing you to bake, boil, fry and roast your food. You can prepare anything while out camping that you could make at home in your own kitchen. Dutch oven and camp cooking creates food that has a unique and unforgettable taste.

Dutch ovens are not pricey, especially for the wide range of benefits you can receive from your dutch oven and camp cooking. You can start the day with some breakfast muffins or end the night with a hearty stew. Campers can even enjoy desserts while out in nature by using a dutch oven and camp cooking.

Dutch ovens are easy to use and can be the only piece of camp cooking you need on your trip to enjoy large and fulfilling meals. Properly caring for your dutch oven and taking some precautions while you are at the campground will allow you to continue enjoying its benefits throughout your lifetime. Following are a few things to avoid when caring for your dutch oven and camp cooking.

• Many dutch ovens are made out of cast iron, which can rust. Never allow your dutch oven sit in water or let water stand in it for long. Even a good coating will not prevent rusting.
• Do not use soap to clean your dutch oven. Hot water and a brush will work fine for cleaning it after a meal. The pores of the metal that your dutch oven is made out of will absorb anything thats put in it and transfer some flavor to what you cook next. Using soap will cause it to be absorbed into the metal and ruin the taste of your food. If you do accidentally use soap, you probably need to replace the coating.
• Dutch ovens are used for slow heating of food. Trying to heat the food too fast by placing it directly in a hot fire will not only burn your food, but it may damage your dutch oven.
• Placing the dutch oven on hot coals or in the fire when it is empty may crack it.
• Adding cold water to a hot dutch oven may also crack it.
• It is a good idea to store your dutch oven with a light coating of oil in it.

Keeping these pointers in mind will have your dutch oven in top shape and ready for some delicious meals. To start enjoying dutch oven and camp cooking, check out the variety of dutch ovens available online. You can find large or small dutch ovens, depending on what type of foods you want to cook at the campground, or you can buy more than one dutch oven and be ready to prepare a feast.
